Well, finally a day off where I don't have to go somewhere - except tonight to a bridal shower. So much to do and I'm not getting very far. We were under a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow. And boy, did it blow this morning. The hardest thing was finding a spot outside to put the hay down on without it blowing into the next county, Poor Ladybug shows what it's like in the wind... BTW, she's normally solid black with a white star!

The other horses didn't want me to take their picture - they wanted treats!

The chickens were happy. They don't get to go out in the winter except on extremely nice days. They are all getting up there in years so they appreciate being inside! I throw bird seed down so they have something to do all day.

Mustn't forget the geese, who also are inside - a silo. No door, but they are pretty happy!

Had a very pretty scene of the fields with snow covering part. Had to climb a fence to get it - the clamps were frozen closed.

Also played with my new camera (I didn't take it outside in the snow). The birds were hungry so I got a few pics.

Of course the woodpeckers are my favorite.

I just had to pull over as soon as I got out on the road this morning. It was a beautiful sunrise - such wonderful color this morning!

I found out Monday morning that if you don't pull over right away for a picture, the colors fade quickly and your shot is gone.

Slow day at work. In fact I left about 1:30 for the rest of the day since I worked Tuesday on my day off. I spent an hour and a half shaving down Gloria's dog "Phibby". Gloria has worked for me in the kennel since it opened and she is boarding all her (5) dogs here for a few days while they are having Christmas in North Dakota. Phibby is a rescue shih tzu who does not allow them to shave him. Also he tends to get into cockleburs so he was a mess. We have to put him under to shave him. I just wish she would do it more than once a year. Poor boy!

Cold today again, very windy. We watched the snow being blown around from the windows in the clinic. The govenor has decided to close all state schools Monday because of the cold. It is supposed to be a high of -15 with a windchill of about -30 and lower. That also means my first yoga class is cancelled. Glad I don't have puppy class. I moved that to Wednesday for two weeks. 

Kennel is pretty full. Annika who was supposed to work tonight, couldn't get her car started so Emily did kennels for me since I had gone home. Tomorrow I work in the clinic and Emily has to do kennels for me again. I have kennels tomorrow night and Sunday night. One of those weekends where no one can work. Tony went up to Alexandria to go ice fishing in a $20,000 ice house where they have satellite TV and keep the temp at 60 degrees. Annika is one of the wrestling managers for high school so they have matches on Saturday's. Keely can't work Saturday and Gloria is in North Dakota. Some days I am tempted to go work in the kennel outside of Blooming Prairie. I wouldn't be in charge and have to hire and fire people. I also wouldn't have to cover when someone didn't show up!

Wind is howling outside even though the temp is 22 degrees. Tomorrow might prove interesting driving with snow drifts.Today was only bad in Clarks Grove itself. Dogs are making really quick trips outside to potty, then back in to claim a spot on the pillows.

One last picture before I go. The sunset tonight was just as awesome as the sunrise. I stepped outside on the steps only since it was SO COLD!

The only thing that could be better is to have this sunset somewhere warmer, perhaps? Hmmm?

Snow!

Snowy Monday. This is the start of another holiday week. We had one doctor taking vacation in Montana so we were down to two. Tom went out on a pig herd check early on and Mike got to stay at the clinic. His truck battery kept dying anyway so he had to get that fixed.

I was busy with kennel stuff. Quite a few dogs went home today. We were pretty full so I also had to keep cleaning kennels for surgery dogs coming in tonight. The snow kept falling and with a temp of 2 degrees, no dog really wanted to stay outside. I also have been looking for another kennel worker. I had tried to get hold of a boy I interviewed in Oct but his phone didn't let me leave a message. And it turns out he hadn't given me his correct email so my message to him didn't get there either. Fortunately his mother happened to come in for an appointment wih two new malamute puppies. This boy's family raises and trains Malamutes and Huskys to help veterans when they come home for war. Quite a special project! As it turns out the boy has started wrestling and isn't available during the week or Saturday mornings. That doesn't leave much for me to work with...

Had to bring Pibb in to the vet. Jacky found him with a badly skinned tail at the base. I was mostly worried about the terribly cold temps, thinking his tail, without protection, might actually freeze. Mike just had me start him on antibiotics and I'm keeping him inside the house now, for at least a couple of weeks. Right now he's in a crate in the mud room but I noticed his drinking water is almost frozen so he might have to come actually inside the house! He absolutely hates his meds by the way. It should be a fun week trying to get them into him.

Had a weird story today. A man came in with an 11 month old Shih Tzu. He needed his dog checked out. It turns out this dog was hit by a car two weeks ago. The family thought the dog had died - he had blood coming out of his nose and mouth and was not moving. The owner put the body next to his shed in the back yard. Two weeks later, which ended up being last Friday, the dog wandered up to the house! They have no idea what happened to the dog during that time, only said they had a shed there where they fed cats. Hmmm. The dog has a broken leg and may need to have it amputated, but other than that seems ok! It reminds me of the rooster I thought I had killed, that walked back to the house after a week in the pit.

Teddi has a loose tooth. It may explain why he's been out of sorts lately. May have to take him in tomorrow. Bunni had to have more stuffing put in her cast, she's worked it all out running like a maniac everywhere.

Decided to cancel puppy class. I'm glad I did, the roads weren't so hot going home. But now I have trouble fitting two more classes in....I start yoga next Monday night. Problem is, I'm already seeing lots of puppies coming in and people are starting to ask about classes. I want to help them get off to the right start. Silly me.

Back to Writing (I hope)

Busy, busy, busy. I'll try to play a little catch up. Today was a nice day for a change. While leaving the driveway this morning I took a picture of a full moon still up in the western sky. At the same time in the eastern sky the sun was coming up! Weird.

Short morning, I had a doctor's appointment to check out my back problem. Every evening severe cramps in the calf and thigh. Numbness in my foot. Diagnosis? Pinched nerve, possible partial disc rupture. Treatment? exercises, maybe physical therapy.
Not too busy a day. The closer it gets to a major holiday, the less appointments and surgeries there are.Trying to get the kennel all organized for Christmas and New Year. With 4 Humane Society dogs still boarding, I had to talk to Christa, the head of the H.S., to find out how long they would be there. Two will go to a rescue tomorrow, one Monday and one end of week to the shelter. Bulldog, mixes. All big dogs.
A couple of ear appointments. One cat with ear mites, one dog with bacteria and yeast. then one farm cat with probable distemper. Unfortunately that cat will probably not make it, and the other cats on the farm may die too. That's what happens when farm cats are not vaccinated.
Of course right before 5 was an emergency. A client had slammed the door at home and caught her dog's tail in the door. Unfortunately for the dog, it had taken the tip of the tail right off. We were able to sedate the dog and sew up the tip but not before the dog had splattered blood from the entrance way, to the waiting area, to the exam room, to the treatment room. So had to stay after a little to do some clean up!

For those of you who do not know, I have a new rescue puppy. "Bunny" is a 3 pound teacup Yorkshire Terrier. She was surrendered to rescue because the owner let her in with her horses and Bunny ended up with a broken leg. Because it was broken at the elbow and the leg is soooo small, it was thought the leg would have to be amputated. The previous owner couldn't (i.e. wouldn't) pay for surgery so she surrendered it. I was asked to take the dog myself, if I would pay for treatment. So I did. The leg has been splinted instead and Bunny is doing well. She hops everywhere with her splint on. Her ears were both infected from what I believe was an attempt at pierced ears (really!). She also was not house trained and had urine scald from having to wear a doggy diaper that wasn't changed often. Ok, the house training isn't going the best, but remember, she weighs 3 pounds! and it has been extremely cold. We are definately making improvements though.

Monday - an emergency c-section on a 200 pound English Mastiff at 5:00. Happy ending - 15 live pupppies! It did mess up my puppy class though. I am glad I don't have to clean up after 15 mastiff puppies for 8 weeks! And I heard she has another mastiff litter of 16 at home! Some people are nuts. Ok, nuttier than me.

Jacky surprised me with a Christmas tree up in the living room, Christmas lights up and on outside and the wreaths up outside. Thank you Santa Jacky!

Tuesday Nov 19

Yesterday was an exciting day. Well, morning really. At 8:00 a client drove up to drop off her dog. In getting out of the car, she suffered a seizure and fell onto the parking lot, cutting her head and blacking out. We all hurried to help, putting blankets under her head and over her, calling 911. The ambulance came. In about 4 minutes which I thought was very quick. The client had regained consciousness be then and insisted that she was ok. But because she was taking a lot of medication, including a blood thinner, her head wound bld a lot. The ambulance took her away. The dog that she dropped off ended up having a pyrometra, or infected uterus. Without surgery, there was a good chance the dog wouldn't make it. But the clients decided they didn't have the money for surgery so we sent the dog home on antibiotics.

My back and arm were hurting a lot so I tried to stay quiet. Of course Megan handed me a list to send out on UPS when she left for lunch. It involved many packets of antibiotic powder that would eventually go in pig drinking water. But they aren't light so I put an empty box on a cart, filled it and got Karla to help me weigh it....61#. That's why I don't work for UPS.

Dog training class tonight. I had three puppies to start at 5:30. That went very well. There was Maddie, a golden doodle (cross between a poodle and a Golden Retriever), Rigby a humane society dog that I was going adopt but Emily took him home to be her first ever dog. He's a cross between a poodle and a blue dapple dachshund. Maybe I'll try to take a picture of him. Finally is Mike and Jackie's new dog Basil, a black and silver miniature schnauzer puppy. So cute! All are pretty well behaved. At 6:00 Lotti joined the group, the English Mastiff. She has great energy and I love her. Also a rescue but less than 2 years old. We did some heeling work as well as sitting while greeting another and working on focus with distraction. I think it went well this week, unlike last week where I was disorganized. I just hope they all felt that way too.

Today started with getting the horses all into the big barn. Jacky likes to leave them outside where I like them in at night. But at 9:00 Kerry was coming to trim their feet so there's a little bit of prep work to get everyone in place. Jacky helped me and then left for St. Cloud for two days. Kerry came on time and had another farrier with him he was training in his way of trimming. It was cold in that barn and Kerry tends to get very talkative when he's talking about what he's passionate about - horse feet! They left around 12 after trimming Piper, Rudi, Cricket , and Lady. It's hard on Kerry's back to do the ponies and minis and today it was hard on my back too. Took the afternoon off, to warm up mostly! The dogs all helped with that. I couldn't sit anywhere without Candy, Uli, Gertie and Teddi draping themselves all over my legs. Doesn't help when your legs are cramping up! Hopefully I will feel better tomorrow.

Well, I only worked for half a day today. Since I worked Saturday, I had a half day off coming to me and there really wasn't much going on. Holly was doing her training on the new software for Intravet , which takes 4 long hours. I did mine 2 weeks ago. So I had just a few boarding sheets to get ready for tomorrow and Monday.

Checked in with Tony. He was able to get the surgery husky outside. His owner was absolutely sure that we had to keep a muzzle on him all night and morning until surgery. According to her, he was extremely aggressive, although he had never bitten anyone. Well, Pam got him back to the kennels yesterday without problem, and even took the muzzle off. Tony was able to take him outside and put him back in without problem. It really makes me angry that owners can blow up behaviors and cause a whole lot more bad behaviors by their own actions. And the owners really believe it too. Their feelings transmit to the dog who reacts either aggressively or defensively because they can feel the owners emotions.

Also in the kennel was a little white American Eskimo spitz. She has stayed with us a few times but is always a caution dog. She will not eat, drink, pee or poop the whole time she stays with us. Tony walked her twice and was concerned he couldn't get her to potty until I told him it was normal for her. You definitely have to be careful around her though.

Then there's "Bette", an out of control fat lab. Her owner is just as nuts as she is and I have no patience with this dog. First thing she does is tip her water bowl over and then jumps and barks nonstop. Tony actually found her water bowl outside her kennel, a 6 foot door she had to get it over somehow.

Other dogs staying are "Silas", another husky, "Clark" the Humane society Rottweiler Pitbull mix, "Charlie" the bichon mix, and "Eyes" the lab mix with eye problems ( really ). Tomorrow will come Coco the wire haired pointer, "Gypsy" a terrier mix, and "Zoey" a west highland terrier.

Other than the kennel, I just helped customers up front and answered the phone. Tried to stay off my feet because of sciatica. Yesterday was tough because I was on my feet all day. I went home after the first two techs got back from lunch. Jacky had just taken hamburgers off the grill when I drove up. Nice weather, and we had to take advantage of it! The hamburger was wonderful!

Relaxed this afternoon. I had to feed the birds - the woodpeckers kept looking for suet. Of course starlings arrived right away, but I also saw the nuthatch and woodpeckers come. It gets dark pretty early now but I started supper and it was ready by 5:30 because it felt late! I made a Kraft recipe called Santa Fe chicken Enchilada Soup. It was soooo good. I added a few things that other reviewers had added and it made it quite spicy! Also use that wonderful Jenny O turkey tenderloins instead of chicken. Boy oh boy, so good?

Tomorrow we drive to Duluth to pick up Aren's motorcycle. Up and back in one day so it will be long. I hope my back and leg doesn't bother me too much but I love going to Duluth- and of course seeing Aren and Becky!

Appointment day today. First I start out by doing kennels. Emily had already put outside her 4 Gehring dogs. They are all Miniature Schnauzers and my two are related to them. They were all here for a teeth cleaning. Glad it wasn't my day - those mouths are a bear. And to have to do all 4 in one day...whew!

Not many dogs boarding. Charlie, a bichon mix that belongs to Tony's sister. They are on a cruise that includes a trip to Spain! Then there's Silas, a gorgeous high energy husky. His biggest problem is his owner forget to pick him up. He has stayed over a week past his pickup date! So, I will put his pickup date as next Monday although he's supposed to go home Saturday. My cute dachshund poodle mix was here too - Emily has adopted him. His new name is "Rigby". Noisy little boy though. And last was "Clark" . I named him Monday, a new Humane Society dog picked up outside of Clark's Grove and dropped off with us. He's a Rottweiler Pitbull mix that has a huge wide head. He's a pretty nice dog. Unneutered of course. We will be watching for signs of aggression. Sometimes it takes a few days to show up. He really likes me and tries to play with me.

Another surgery dog for Emily was a little dachshund. It's her name though that will have you giggling. Her name is..."Foot and a Half"! I guess that's how long she was when they brought her home. I really wonder what they call her though.

Mike's daughters dog " Lucy" , a Golden Retriever puppy, survived her second surgery. She was spayed last Wednesday and was being boarded with us. Got really sick Sunday, on death's door. On Monday, Mike discovered a stick stuck against the roof of her mouth , between her teeth. It had gotten infected and, in 2 or 3 days, almost killed the dog! The infection went systemic and today was the first day she started looking better.

"Reno" came in yesterday after eating rat poison. He collapsed at home this morning and they brought him back in. Also the empty bucket of rat poison " Tom Cat ". I guess it's the worst poison because it affects the Central Nervous System. It also swells the brain. Jen dosed him with charcoal but it doesn't look good.

Kind of a messy day in appointments. One chihuahua mix that had been a rescue dog, absolutely panicked when we trimmed his nails. "Racer" got so upset, he loosened bowels and bladder and anal glands all over. He was muzzled too as he kept trying to bite us. Unknown to these dogs though, we don't often let go, no matter what. I could have used a better clean up though.

And then Megan gave me a mammary tumor they had taken off Foot and a Half. I cut it open to do a tissue smear and it was full of liquid. It splattered all over me....of course.

A Lunch and Learn with Merial rep got me a Pour House Club Sandwich - yum! And the rep had just gotten back from Tanzania and had her pictures along on her iPad. Soooo that's what I looked at throughout the meeting. Now I know where I want to go next!

Lots of surgeries came in for tomorrow. 3 black cat brothers to be neutered, 1 Pitbull to be spayed, 1 Pitbull to have a lump removed and to be spayed, and Jill's lab "Harvey" for a teeth clean. I will be a tired puppy tomorrow!
